What is an MOT?

Cars over 3 years old must have an annual MOT (Ministry of Transport) test to check it meets road safety and environmental standards. Listed below are the main elements that are checked as part of the MOT test.

When to get an MOT

It is crucial to make sure that any car or motorbike over 3 years old has a valid MOT. If you’re not sure when yours expires, you should check your last test certificate or check through the government website. MOT tests need to be carried out 4 weeks before your current certificate expires.

Apart from the obvious safety and performance concerns, if you don’t have a valid MOT certificate you cannot lawfully drive on the road and if caught you risk being fined up to £1,000. You will also not be able to renew your car tax and your insurance will also become invalid, meaning that if your car is involved in an accident your claims will be affected especially if an injury is involved.
